A new website for BBC One's flagship arts programme
The Brief
The BBC wished to launch a new website to accompany their flagship arts programme, Imagine. The site was to follow a minimalist design in keeping with the program, content tagging and content management. Futher the delivery date was only five weeks away.
The Solution
The first stage was design, and initially this involved making sure we knew what we could and could not do within the BBC's guidelines. Within these design constraints we set to work creating visuals that would suit the Imagine brand and its artistic aims.
Keyword search page
In essence the website was to be quite simple, and not conventional in its approach to content - almost blog-like. Posted articles would form the core of the website with various media elements attached, such as videos and image galleries. This is exclusive content that complements the show's episodes.
To enable content producers to look after the website we implemented our content management system, Vertigo. This enables them to add any number of articles, keywords and media to the website.
“Substance Design worked tirelessly with us to provide designs for the Imagine… website which we felt successfully achieved our goals and resulted in an attractive and easy to use website.”
All this content is categorised by episodes and keywords. Visitors coming to the website can work their way through content based on an episode they may have seen on TV, or by keywords. Articles sharing the same keywords will mean visitors can find out more about a subject than they initially thought.
From design to development and then to launch took just four weeks, with everything coming together in time for the broadcast of the first epsiode.
The Result
The website now forms an integral part of the programme's content, providing exclusive material to extend the viewer's experience as well as providing infomation about upcoming episodes.
The website hosted the exclusive Gilbert and George downloadable artwork titled Planed for 48 hours and received over 100,000 downloads requests within the period. The site achieved 2nd place on Google within a few days of going live.

Working within constraints and within a very tight timeframe they approached things with flexibility and went out of their way to make the launch as smooth as possible for all involved within the BBC.
